Newsletter February 3rd- 7th

• 2/11- Assembly
• 2/11- Math Night, PLEASE consider joining me. There will be a free pizza dinner and child care while we meet and discuss the new math expectations and how to help students master them
• 2/14 Valentine's Celebration- please do NOT send in ANY candy. A list with student names will be sent home soon.
• 2/15-2/23- February Recess, no school
• When children return from February recess, we begin assessments for the end of term 2 and term 2 report cards (conferences in March!) so please keep them reading throughout the break so that they are prepared to do their very best when they return. It's amazing how much one week without reading can get in their way!

Volunteer Schedule for February

 

In Reader's Workshop we wrapped up our unit on nonfiction. We have made tremendous gains as readers during the past month and did a really great job reading the more challenging nonfiction genre! Next up, we will be focusing on characters and connections to the texts we read.

 
Because of the difficulty the children had with the words two weeks ago, we are 1 week behind the list on my website...

	Next Week:
New Words	too, saw, what, were, from Practice
Review Words	any, must, under, each, some Practice

We are wrapping up our nonfiction writing unit with some penguin reports. We are using the kidspiration app to collect our expert facts about the penguin of our choosing.  Then we will compose an expository paragraph and upload them to the kidblog in the next few weeks.

This past week we worked on becoming super word problem solvers. We learned to:
1) Read the problem
2) Find the "power word(s)" 
3) Get the numbers in our head
4) Write the equation
4 Use a strategy and solve

Next week we will finish up the unit with a focus on fact families.
